suz, i was just thinking the same thing. you might expect the green to make the males stand out a mile but that one blends in amazingly well.

Hi - here's a couple from the Hurn/Sopley area of Dorset today - the lower one is most definitely not using his camouflage - stood out in the dead bracken like a sore thumb !

Took a chance with the weather yesterday and drove down to Studland. We saw a few Sand lizards about and what a difference a few weeks has made to their colours. I am disappointed not to have recognised the snakes tail disappearing into the heather though,I will never know if that was my first Smooth snake, a species yet to tick  from the list.Whilst on the subject of ticks, I wonder if the ticks that these lizards carry are involved in any reptile disease transmission.We found a Z.viv outside Wareham with a few ticks.
